How Shopify payment fees work

With Shopify Payments, you pay a card rate that falls as your plan goes up: 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic down to 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced for online orders. If you use a different payment provider instead (PayPal, Stripe and so on), Shopify adds its own third-party transaction fee of 2% on Basic, on top of that provider's fees.

What are Shopify Payments fees?

For US online card payments: 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced.

Why does Shopify charge a transaction fee?

If you don't use Shopify Payments, Shopify charges 0.2–2% per order on top of your payment provider's fees. Using Shopify Payments removes it.

Is it worth upgrading my Shopify plan to save on fees?

Run your monthly sales through both rates. The card-rate savings only beat the higher subscription price once you're processing a significant volume.
