How PayPal fees work
When someone pays you for goods or services, PayPal deducts its fee from the payment you receive. The standard US rate is 3.49% + $0.49, which also applies to PayPal invoices paid through PayPal. When the buyer pays an invoice by card, it's slightly lower at 2.99% + $0.49. International payments add 1.5%.
Friends & family vs. goods & services
Friends and family payments funded from a bank or PayPal balance are free, but they're for personal payments only and have no purchase protection. Using them to get paid for sales breaks PayPal's terms and leaves both sides unprotected.
Should you pass fees on?
