How eBay fees work
eBay's main charge is the final value fee: a percentage of the total amount the buyer pays, including shipping and sales tax, plus a small per-order fee. That's why charging more for shipping doesn't avoid fees: eBay takes its cut of shipping too.
Some categories have their own rates: books and media are higher at 15.3%, guitars much lower at 6.7%, and sneakers over $150 pay a flat 8% with no per-order fee. Pick your category above for the right rate.
Ways to pay less
- Open an eBay Store if you sell regularly: most categories drop to 12.7%.
- Use eBay International Shipping to avoid the 1.65% international fee.
- Keep your seller rating above "Below Standard": since July 2026, sellers rated Below Standard for four or more consecutive months pay an extra 7%.
- Treat Promoted Listings as optional, and set the ad rate in your calculation before you list.
